Scanning Slides & Negatives

Each slide is scanned individually as batch scanning of slides and photos can present several challenges. Variations in exposure and colour balance can result in inconsistent scan quality and color accuracy. Improper cropping of slides can result in uneven borders or cut-off images. I make the necessary adjustments by hand and use image editing software such as Adobe Photoshop or Lightroom to retouch the scanned images as needed to remove dust and scratches. I adjust colour balance and exposure, and enhance details to improve image quality. I clean each slide and photo thoroughly using a soft brush or compressed air to remove dust and debris. Attention to detail, high-quality equipment, and proper techniques to ensure the best results.

Prints

Prints can be susceptible to damage from handling, exposure to light, moisture, or other environmental factors. However, prints can be protected by framing, laminating, or storing them in archival-quality materials.

Slides

Slides are more durable than prints in terms of physical handling, as they are made of transparent materials and enclosed in protective mounts. However, slides can degrade over time due to exposure to heat, humidity, or improper storage conditionsThe introduction of the Kodak Brownie camera made photography accessible to the masses. Its affordability and simplicity encouraged a new wave of amateur photographers.

Transferring and digitising cine film

The introduction of the Kodak Brownie camera in 1900 made photography more accessible, leading to a surge in amateur photography and the documentation of everyday life. In 1935, Eastman Kodak introduced Kodachrome, the first commercially successful color film. This revolutionized the slide industry, allowing for vibrant color slides. Kodachrome slides became extremely popular for both professional and amateur photographers, leading to the widespread use of 35mm slide projectors.

Slides were also a popular form of entertainment for families and individuals. Home slide projectors allowed people to share vacation photos, family events, and other personal moments with friends and relatives. Slide shows became a common form of social entertainment at gatherings and parties.

Although their popularity has declined with the rise of digital technology, slides continue to hold a nostalgic and historical significance for many people.
